How to Write a Personal Trainer Resume
What You'll Learn When you have found the right personal training job to apply for, you will need to know how to maximise your chances of successfully landing the job. Below are tips for sending a job application, writing your resume and interviewing for a job.
Why it's Important When you are applying for a job, you are selling yourself and trying to persuade the employer that you are the right candidate for the job. This is really important to remember; doing the bare minimum and ticking boxes, to get your application sent off, is not going to be the most effective way to sell yourself in the best way.
Going the extra mile and making yourself stand out will go a long way. Try to avoid looking like you have copy and pasted the same thing to multiple different employers (even if you have).
Finding A Job
There are plenty of personal training jobs available. It is a heavy growth industry with more gyms and health clubs popping up all over the place, as the world continues to struggle with the obesity crisis.
Job applications nowadays are usually done online in a responsive website, so you really cannot go wrong. Answer the questions honestly whilst presenting yourself in the best possible light and if there is the option to add additional comments, or ask questions, take that opportunity. A little bit of extra effort here shows that you are serious and you care about this job.

Writing a resume is all about making every word count. A resume is typically one page long and the more impressive you appear, without having to waffle on, the more likely you are to receive an interview.
Let’s break it down by section and make sure that you are presenting yourself the best way possible in each one.
What do you want to get from this job?
Just a sentence or two, explaining why you hope to get this job.
Try not to be too cliché here; say something honest.
Here are a couple of examples:
“I know how it is to be out of shape and unhappy with my body. I want to help other people to fall in love with working out and be confident in their body like I have.”
“To develop my knowledge and gain experience as a personal trainer, to help people transform their body and improve their lives.”
If you have industry experience, right about that. Also add some things from below.
If you do not have industry experience you need to write about anything that is relevant:
Work in or around a fitness facility in any capacity
Time shadowing a personal trainer or apprenticeship
Service industry or client service work
Other job experience
Start with industry relevant qualifications. The personal training qualification, any additional courses you have studied and relevant schooling – such as sports science degree.
Then list standard qualifications, from highest to lowest; university, school, etc.
Skills is one of the most important sections on the resume, because it has the broadest scope to be creative and present yourself well.
Keep everything relevant; but think of your job role beyond just exercise instruction. You are working closely with the client’s lifestyle, it requires empathy and understanding, creating behaviour change and commitment. If you have skills or experience in these areas then write it down.
Do you have knowledge of computers or retail experience? Are you bilingual? Add any other skills that you possess which are useful for the job and preferably help you stand out from other applicants.
When you have written your resume, check and double check it for spelling and grammar. Little things like this can ruin what is otherwise a great resume. Have someone else proof it to double check. Mistakes look poor and give the impression that you don’t care. Everyone makes honest mistakes, but when it comes to finding a job, you only have one chance to make an impression.
To accompany your resume you will need a cover letter. A cover letter is a brief letter, typically half of one page long that outlines your application. It is usually the first thing that a prospective employer will look at, so worth spending some time getting right.
The point of the cover letter is not to just rehash your resume, but rather to highlight the most important bits. To demonstrate that you have the skills and qualities that the job calls for. Make the prospective employer want to read your resume and find out more about you.

Interview skills are pretty standard across industries for the most part, but a lot of personal training jobs will involve a practical gym floor part too. Be sure to ask in advance whether you should dress smart and bring gym wear. It is always better to ask and get it right, than to assume and get it wrong.
Here are some tips for successful interviewing.
Always be at least a few minutes early.
Try and stay relaxed. Interviewing can be nerve wracking, but it is just a conversation about a job, if you don’t get this one, you will get another one. Being too nervous can stop your personality coming across and hurt your chances of securing the job.
Dress smart. It’s better to overdress than to underdress. Present yourself clean and smart, make sure you are well groomed and looking professional.
Maintain good posture, eye contact and smile where appropriate. People make judgements on first impressions and this predominantly comes from how you present yourself through body language and eye contact. If you are answering questions, look at the interviewer and make sure you listen well. If you can’t communicate well with an interviewer, they will assume you can’t communicate well with a client either.
Speak slowly and clearly. People tend to rush their words when they are nervous and it diminishes the impact of the words.
Try to communicate your personality. Don’t be too wooden in just giving answers you think they want to hear, if you’re passionate about something, let it out and if you honestly don’t know something, there is nothing wrong with admitting it.
If you have a practical part of your interview, be confident. To be a good trainer you need to know more than the client, not more than the best trainer, display your confidence in your ability.
Be ready to learn and ask questions where possible. Enthusiasm goes a long way, especially if you are younger or less experienced.
Additional Tips for Those New to the Industry/Less Experienced
Everybody starts somewhere and to get your foot in the door, you have to start working somewhere to gain the experience. Displaying enthusiasm and passion, a desire to learn from those more experienced and going out of your way for people will help make up for a lack of experience when you are selling yourself to a prospective employer.
If you have the opportunity, try shadowing a successful personal trainer for a week and learning from them. You will gain a lot of knowledge which will help you and nobody else will do this. It will make you stand out above others who may have the same qualifications and experience as you.
Present yourself really well, ask questions, be enthusiastic and demonstrate passion and you stand a good chance of being hired. If someone likes you as a person and thinks you will be a good fit in the team, get on well with clients and be a good person to have around, you are more likely to get the job. You can learn skills and develop experience easily.
